Read Aloud Favorites and Megatron’s Birthday Giveaway

giveawayI’ve been teasing the last few days on our Facebook page about a giveaway starting today!  Have any of you guessed what the prize will be yet?

Megatron is turning one in 8 days!  To celebrate, I thought it would be fun to have a giveaway.  Keep reading to the end to find out how to enter!

We’re big on read alouds in our family.  Having three children now, I realize what works for one child will not work for another.  Little Miss loves to be read to.  She’ll bring me books throughout the day.  She cuddles, points out pictures, laughs when I leave words out or finishes the sentences of well loved books if I stop halfway through.  She’ll read the same book over, and over, and over, until we both have it memorized.  Her favorite books are Goodnight Moon and Goodnight Gorilla.  Although she’ll read just about anything, especially Princess themed books.  My favorite book to read to her right now is Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots? by Carmela LaVigna Coyle.  It’s a sweet story about a little girl asking her mom is Princesses wear hiking boots, or jump in puddles, or climb trees, and her mom’s sweet answers in return.  It rhymes, and has a great message that a Princess can be messy, have fun, get outside, or even have bad days too.

Green Bubbles is not like Little Miss at all.  He has never sat and cuddled with me during story time.  He roams, walks away, comes back again, leaves again.  It’s very distracting trying to read to a child like this but that’s just his style.  I’ve discovered after years of frustration that he is actually still listening to me, even though he’s not sitting next to me looking at all the pictures.  Lately, his read aloud time are chapter books.  He doesn’t enjoy picture books and, in hindsight, I don’t think he ever really did.  There are only two books he’s asked me to repeatedly read, but never to the point of memorization like Little Miss.  Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel and Room on the Broom were two of his favorite when he was smaller.  If you ask him now, his favorite read aloud is the one we just finished up, Mr. Poppers Penguins by Richard Atwater.

IMG_6584Megatron is, almost, a year old so it’s a lot harder to judge what his favorite book is at this point.   I do know he gets a giant smile on his face whenever I pull out a story to read for bedtime.  Like most babies and toddlers, we read Goodnight Moon a lot.  He points out a lot of the pictures and tries to turn the pages in the book.  Mostly, he just succeeds in ripping the book from my hands as I try to read, or closing the book on my fingers.  I do like reading him Little Blue Truck however.  It’s a cute board book with a lot of rhyming cadence in its pages as well as a positive message about being friendly and helpful.  And who doesn’t like reading the phase beep beep over and over again!

But enough about our favorite read aloud books.  Are you ready for the giveaway?  What are your favorite read aloud books?  Leave a comment telling me for a chance to win a hardback copy of The Complete Tales of Uncle Remus.  You know, the Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, Brer Bear stories with the tar baby, brier patches, and many other memorable folk tales.   Get extra entries by commenting on separate comments if you like my facebook page and/or follow the blog! The giveaway will end Saturday, the 21st and a winner will be picked by a random number generator and announced that night on our facebook page.  Be sure to leave your email as well, so I can contact you if you win!

  1. Right now our favorite read aloud book is Moo, Baa, La La La by Sandra Boyden. And like Little Miss, we can read books over and over.

  2. Our favorite read aloud this year has been by far Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang by Ian Fleming. My girls absolutely adored it & loved all of the characters, especially the gangsters . They were quite disappointed to learn that the movie was so different from the book.

  3. Mike’s favorite read aloud book was Fox In Sox, it was one book that comes with a warning. The tongue twisters get harder and harder.
